Nearly 2 million
The number of single use plastic bags used and discarded every minute.
10 - 1,000 years
The time they take to decompose in a landfill where they break down into tiny particles that contaminate our soil and water.
> 1 million animals
The number of mammals and sea birds that die each year after becoming entangled in or eating plastic bags in our oceans.
Discarded plastic bags require a different collection system and processing equipment from other recyclables. So most of it gets dumped in our landfills and oceans instead of actually getting recycled.
There are lots of easy and accessible alternatives to single use plastic but there is an overall lack of awareness about its impact on our environment.
Théla, started as an initiative to decrease the amount of single use plastic that ends up in our landfills & oceans and increase awareness about its impact and alternatives.
From discarded plastic bags to beautiful products
All Théla products are handmade with a lot of love & thoughtfulness – the plastic bags are individually collected, hand washed & dried, meticulously cut by hand into yarn, and finally crocheted & hand sewn into unique pieces.
Théla is started by me, Diti, an independent graphic designer from Mumbai, currently living in Athens and attempting to learn some Greek!
My love for design, making things with my hands and living consciously and as sustainably as possible inspired me to start Théla.
